So, despite being very noisy at city speeds, the FCA-sourced
2.0-litre diesel with 170 horsepower and 350 Nm is as capable
as any of its other uses. Because the motor is mostly vibrationfree
and produces a smooth wave of torque from just below
2,000 rpm, the 1,800+ kg SUV feels alert in most situations.
The hydraulic steering system feels a little strange. It's heavy
enough at low speeds to make parking a work, then settles into
a lightness that makes navigating city traffic a breeze but isn't
quite light enough for interstate driving. Over sharp bumps,
there's some kickback, and under heavy acceleration, there's
noticeable torque steer, which detracts from the SUV's
The light upholstery may require some upkeep, but it has
increased the impression of space in the already spacious
cabin, and the new wood trim appears more real than the
Harrier's. The dash design is based on the Harrier and uses the
same materials, but the fit and finish has been upgraded by a
significant amount. The switches are a little more tactile than
previously, and there aren't as many loose panels. The newly
added ambient lighting contributes even more to this
heightened impression of quality.
Also available on top-spec Safaris are a six-seater option with
captain's chairs in the middle row. These seats are luxuriously
cushioned, have a wide range of adjustment (including a Boss
mode), and a fold-down armrest. Passengers with broader
frames may notice that the seats aren't the biggest available.
